New law regarding solar energy

It’s official. From January 1st, 2020, anyone in Portugal who produces solar energy will be able to share it with their neighbours. Until now, only individual self-consumption was allowed, but a new law allows consumers to group together and share the same unit of energy production.

In practice, the new rules will allow electricity consumers in their neighbourhood to organise themselves for production from renewable sources, consumption, sharing, storage and sale of surpluses.

The law, already published in Diário da República, aims to ensure that Portugal achieves the goals defined in the National Energy-Climate Plan for 2021-2030, namely to achieve a 47% share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption in 2030, as well as to reduce the price of electricity consumption for those who adhere to self-consumption.

The idea is to ensure “greater efficiency from an energy and environmental point of view, and ensure that energy transition opportunities (e.g. costs of the national electricity system) are shared fairly and impartially, both by companies and by citizens interested in participating, without public subsidies”, the document also states.
